The Journey into
the Polyverse

There are worlds behind the world. Some lie beyond a door that was not there yesterday. Some wait at the end of a stairway that ought to lead only to an attic. Some arrive by train, by dream, by accident, or by the suspiciously cheerful suggestion of an imp who assures you that the lever is perfectly safe.

The Polyverse is not a tidy arrangement of planets and kingdoms. It is a living, tangled multitude of realms: storybook gardens with rules stricter than any palace court; moonlit kingdoms where grief can make the whole world grow dim; carnivals whose crowds do not always go home; cities of brass, ash, clockwork, ghosts, dragons, mushrooms, and things with far too many opinions about proper manners. Every realm has its own laws. Every law, sooner or later, matters.

At its hidden center hangs the Etherodrome: an immense station of brass galleries, glass, gears, portals, observatories, ledgers, and machinery large enough to make a cathedral feel modest. From its endless rings, worlds may be watched as though they were plays upon a stage. Doors may be nudged open or closed. Time may be inspected, misfiled, or—if the wrong person reaches the right lever—put into rather serious disorder. The Etherodrome is tended by watchers, clerks, engineers, and other souls who have learned that no job is ever entirely safe once the paperwork begins to whisper back.

The great realm system was shaped by the Three Goddesses: Khailley, radiant with purity and childlike wonder; Constance, keeper of balance, duty, and truths that are rarely pleasant but generally necessary; and Ahniella, elegant patron of mischief, corruption, and the slow unraveling of all good things. Their influence can be felt in every world, though never quite in the same way. A realm may offer comfort, judgment, temptation, laughter, terror, or all five before breakfast.

And beyond every map, rumor, false paradise, and desperate search lies Ber’Ebrin—the Beautiful Place. Some call it the final realm. Some call it paradise. Others become so intent on finding it that they lose themselves entirely. For Ber’Ebrin has two rules: only the worthy may enter, and only those who do not seek it may find it. This has not prevented generations of travelers from trying, of course. It has merely made the journey stranger.

The children who become realm-travelers do not enter these worlds merely to see them. They are drawn in when something within them is unfinished: a fear to face, a truth to learn, a friend to save, a choice to make, or a piece of themselves they have not yet understood. The portals open. The Polyverse watches. And once the first door appears, it is rather difficult to pretend one has not noticed it.
